The Shrewsbury Arms
Shrewsbury Arms is on the outskirts of Little Budworth about 4 miles west
of Winsford. Set on the A49, this former farmhouse is about 350 years old
and became a beer shop in 1841. It was a working Dairy Farm, and perhaps
as a result, there is an extensive garden. There are four distinct areas
inside, including a cosy snug and a separate dining room, which was once
the farm kitchen. Exposed beams, cast-iron tables and wooden settles abound.
It is a Robinson's house, and its hand pumps dispense Real Ale in the form of Unicorn (formerly known as Best Bitter) (4.2% ABV). Sadly, the turnover is unable to maintain the Stockport brewer's mild in traditional form, so the mild is keg. For similar reasons, the licensee is obliged to keep the Frederic's and the occasional seasonal beers on a system known as a "cask breather". This means that traditional beer in casks has CO2 applied, although not under pressure, in order to keep the beer from oxidising by contact with the air. Many people cannot tell the difference from beer kept in the normal way, but this does take it out of the strict CAMRA definition of Real Ale. This is a controversial subject. If you try it, tell us what you think.
The menu offers a wide range of reasonably priced, good quality food. Meals can be taken in the cosy non-smoking dining room or the general bar area. On the menu are the traditional favourites, Prawn Cocktail, Steaks, Mixed Grill and Lasagne, alongside some newer tempting choices such as Breaded Jalapeno peppers, Ginger & Pineapple Chicken and Thai Red Chicken Curry. Some other exotic options include Duckling a l'Orange and Halibut with Prawns and Dill. The wide choice of vegetarian meals includes Mushroom and Nut Fettucini and Vegetable Stroganoff. The range of sweets and wines is as wide as you would expect. The bar menu features sandwiches and lighter snacks.
If you are in the area or fancy a trip out into the Cheshire countryside, why not call in at the Shrewsbury Arms for a bite to eat? You could try a walk in the nearby Little Budworth Country Park beforehand to work up an appetite!
